The short answer: the best mattress for most people
The best mattress of 2026 is the Saatva Latex Hybrid. It is the only mattress in our database that scores well on every measure that matters over the life of a bed: RTINGS measured 8.6 for cooling, 9.1 for edge support and 8.3 for longevity — the highest durability score of any of the 24 models we track — and it holds three separate 2026 RTINGS awards (best latex, best organic and best for seniors). Sleep Foundation gave it 9.6 out of 10. That combination is why it tops our Research Score at 8.5.
It is not cheap, though, and it is firm. If you want the most mattress per dollar, the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid at around $699 for a queen is the best value bed in a box we can find: RTINGS measured edge support of 9.0 and cooling of 7.9, numbers that beat beds costing three times as much. And if you sleep on your side, the plusher DreamCloud Premier Hybrid is the most comfortable mattress for shoulders and hips at its price, with pressure relief of 8.2 and motion isolation of 8.6.
Below you will find the winner for each type of sleeper — back pain, side sleepers, hot sleepers, heavier people and couples — plus the beds that missed the cut and exactly why. Every number links back to its source at the bottom of the page.
Best mattresses 2026 by the numbers
We do not run a mattress lab, and we will not pretend we slept on 24 beds. What we do is aggregate the people who measure: RTINGS, which tests firmness in pascals per millimetre and runs repeatable pressure, heat, motion and edge tests; expert outlets such as Sleep Foundation, Tom’s Guide, Mattress Clarity, Sleepopolis, Forbes Vetted and TechRadar; and owner ratings from independent platforms. The headline figures from this year’s research:

The single most important pattern in the data is that durability is the weak spot of almost every popular mattress. RTINGS scored the Saatva Classic 5.1–5.7 for longevity, the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid 5.5, the Nectar beds 5.7–6.2 and the Bear Elite Hybrid only 4.3. The exceptions are latex-based beds: RTINGS gave the Saatva Latex Hybrid 8.3, and the all-latex Zenhaven, which RTINGS hasn’t tested, is built from the same long-lasting material. If you plan to keep a mattress for a decade, that matters more than any marketing claim about “premium foams”.
The second pattern is that price and performance are only loosely linked. The cheapest hybrid on our list that experts genuinely rate, the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid, out-measures the $1,895 Saatva Classic on edge support, cooling and pressure relief in RTINGS’ tests. What expensive beds buy you is mostly durability, firmness choice, delivery and service — real advantages, but not ones every buyer needs.
A few things also changed this year that older “best mattress” lists miss. DreamCloud renamed its whole range (Classic, Premier, Luxe and Ultra), so reviews written before 2025 may describe a different bed. Bear discontinued its Star Hybrid in May 2026 and redesigned the Pro Hybrid at 13 inches. And Puffy moved to a 365-night trial for orders from 23 February 2026, although many review sites still quote 101 nights. We checked every model and policy on this page in October 2026.

† Owner rating from the brand’s own site only — treat it as a ceiling. Brand-level Trustpilot scores are shown on each brand review.
Expert consensus tells a slightly different story from the lab numbers. The Saatva Classic and Bear Elite Hybrid collect the most “best of” awards from independent guides, but their measured durability is middling. The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid holds no category awards in our sample yet scores near the top on measurements. We use awards as one input, not the deciding one.

How we chose the best mattresses
Every mattress on this page gets a Research Score out of 10, using the formula published on our How we rate page. Half of it (50%) is measured performance across seven sub-scores: pressure relief, spinal support, cooling, motion isolation, edge support, durability and value. Where RTINGS has tested the bed we use its measured values; where it hasn’t, we use Sleep Foundation or Sleepopolis sub-scores adjusted down about a point to match RTINGS’ stricter scale.
Another 30% is expert consensus — the average of published scores from outlets such as Sleep Foundation, Tom’s Guide, Mattress Clarity and Sleepopolis, with a small bonus for each independent “best of” award. The final 20% is owner ratings. Brand-run review widgets count a quarter as much as independent platforms like Trustpilot and GoodBed, and we cap the owner component so a giant pool of five-star brand reviews can’t carry a mediocre bed.
Then we applied judgment, because the highest score is not always the right answer for a category. For each category winner we asked three questions. Does the bed lead on the sub-scores that matter for that sleeper — pressure relief for side sleepers, support for back pain, cooling for hot sleepers, motion isolation for couples? Do RTINGS’ positional scores (side, back and stomach) agree? And do the expert awards point the same way? When two of three agreed, the bed won. Where they disagreed, we say so in the write-up.
#1 · Best mattress overall
Saatva Latex Hybrid
Organic latex with a 5-zone lumbar layer over pocketed coils — the most durable, coolest Saatva and RTINGS’ best latex pick.
Read the full Saatva Latex Hybrid review →Performance (0–10)
6.5/10 · Medium-firm — Brand says Medium Firm (6), ‘best suited for back and stomach sleepers’; RTINGS measured Firm (60 Pa/mm).
The Saatva Latex Hybrid wins because it has no real weak spot in the lab. Organic latex over zoned pocketed coils gives it a buoyant, on-top-of-the-bed feel, and latex is the most durable comfort material used in mattresses. RTINGS measured longevity of 8.3, cooling of 8.6 and edge support of 9.1, and its positional scores are unusually even: 7.4 for side sleepers, 7.6 for back and 7.7 for stomach. Sleep Foundation scored it 9.6 overall with 9.5 for durability.
The catch is firmness. Saatva calls it medium-firm, but RTINGS measured it as firm (60 Pa/mm), and Mattress Clarity — the outlier at 3.9/5 — found it too firm for lighter people with limited contouring. If you weigh under 130 lb and sleep on your side, skip it. If you sleep on your back or stomach, run hot, or weigh more and want a bed that will still feel the same in year eight, this is the one. Note the $99 return fee and the $2,346 queen price.

#2 · Best value · best mattress in a box
DreamCloud Classic Hybrid

6.5/10 · Medium-firm — Testers 6–7.5; brand now labels it Firm; RTINGS measured Medium-Plush (39 Pa/mm).
If you only read one line of this guide: the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid is the best mattress under $1,000. Tom’s Guide names it its best mattress under $1,000 and top bed-in-a-box, Sleepopolis gave it 4.9/5, and RTINGS measured 9.0 for both edge support and responsiveness. Its value sub-score of 9.5 is the highest in our database.
It suits back, combination and average-weight side sleepers best; RTINGS scored it 7.7 for side, 7.1 for back and 6.9 for stomach sleeping. Firmness reports vary — testers put it anywhere from 6 to 7.5, and DreamCloud itself now labels it firm, although RTINGS measured it on the plush side of medium (39 Pa/mm). The weak spots are longevity (5.5) and the brand’s customer service: DreamCloud holds just 1.9 stars on Trustpilot. The 365-night trial is your insurance. Compare it head to head in Saatva vs DreamCloud.

#3 · Best mattress for back pain
Bear Elite Hybrid
RTINGS’ best medium-firm mattress for most people: three firmnesses, near-perfect edges, great cooling.
Read the full Bear Elite Hybrid review →Performance (0–10)
6/10 · Medium-firm — Medium tested (RTINGS Medium-Firm, 51 Pa/mm). Soft ≈5, Firm ≈7–8.
The best evidence on mattresses and back pain points to medium-firm. In the Kovacs trial, published in The Lancet in 2003, 313 adults with chronic low-back pain did better on medium-firm mattresses than on firm ones. The Bear Elite Hybrid in its Medium option is exactly that: RTINGS measured it as medium-firm (51 Pa/mm) and named it the best medium-firm mattress for most people in 2026. Its spinal support sub-score of 7.5 is among the highest of any boxed hybrid we track.
It also wins on flexibility. You can order Soft (around 5), Medium (6) or Firm (7–8), so a heavier back sleeper can go firmer without switching brands. Edge support measured 9.7 — the best in our database — and Tom’s Guide gave it its Best Cooling award. The big caveat is durability: RTINGS rated longevity only 4.3, and sagging is the enemy of a pain-free back. Use the trial and register the warranty. For chronic pain and a bigger budget, the Saatva Rx is our upgrade pick — see the full best mattress for back pain guide.

#4 · Best mattress for side sleepers
DreamCloud Premier Hybrid
A plusher Euro-top hybrid that suits side sleepers and couples, at about $1,000.
Read the full DreamCloud Premier Hybrid review →Performance (0–10)
5.5/10 · Medium — Labeled medium-firm but tests softer (RTINGS Medium-Plush, 36 Pa/mm).
Side sleepers need a bed that lets the shoulder and hip sink in while the waist stays supported. The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid does that better than anything near its price. RTINGS rated it 8.1 for light and average-weight side sleepers and measured pressure relief of 8.2 — the highest pressure score in our database — while Sleep Foundation gave pressure relief a 9.
It is also a quietly excellent couples’ bed: motion isolation 8.6 and edge support 8.5, which is rare for a plush mattress. It is labeled medium-firm but tests softer (RTINGS measured 36 Pa/mm), which is great for side sleepers and wrong for most back and stomach sleepers. Longevity is a weak 5.1, and cooling verdicts disagree — RTINGS measured 8.0, while Mattress Clarity and Tom’s Guide each gave temperature regulation 3.5/5. More options, including picks for shoulder and hip pain, are in our best mattress for side sleepers guide.

Nectar Classic Hybrid

6.5/10 · Medium-firm — Testers 5.5–7; RTINGS Medium-Firm (56 Pa/mm).
Our overall winner is also the coolest mattress we track (RTINGS cooling 8.6), so if you sleep hot and can afford it, buy the Saatva Latex Hybrid. For everyone else, the Nectar Classic Hybrid is the best cooling mattress at a normal price. Mattress Clarity named it its top hybrid pick for cooling and scored temperature 4.5/5, Sleep Foundation gave it 8 for temperature, and RTINGS measured cooling of 7.9 — on par with beds costing twice as much.
Coils let air move through the core in a way all-foam beds can’t, and it still isolates motion like a foam bed (8.6). It is medium-firm (RTINGS 56 Pa/mm), best for back sleepers and couples. RTINGS flagged lower-quality memory foam, longevity is 5.7, and it’s too firm for light side sleepers — Forbes Vetted only recommends it to side sleepers over 150 lb. More cooling options live on our best cooling mattress page.

#6 · Best mattress for heavy people
Saatva HD
Purpose-built for 300–500 lb sleepers: heavy-gauge coils, zoned latex, rated 500 lb per side (full size and up).
Read the full Saatva HD review →Performance (0–10)
7/10 · Firm — Saatva rates it Medium Firm (5–7) for sleepers over 300 lb and says those under 300 lb ‘might find it firmer’; average-weight testers measured 7–8.
Most mattresses are designed and tested around average-weight bodies, and heavier sleepers pay for it in sagging and sinkage. The Saatva HD is one of very few beds engineered from the coils up for 300 to 500 lb: heavier-gauge steel, a five-zone natural latex layer and a confirmed weight rating of 500 lb per side. TechRadar names it the best premium mattress for heavy people, Sleep Foundation scored it 9.2 with 8.5 for durability, and its spinal-support sub-score of 8.3 is the highest in our database.
It is not for average-weight sleepers: Mattress Clarity’s testers felt 8/10 firmness. It is expensive at around $3,094, Saatva recommends its HD foundation on top, and motion isolation is only 6.0. For a cheaper plus-size option, see our best mattress for heavy people guide.
What owners & testers like

#7 · Best motion isolation for couples
Nectar Premier Memory Foam
Tom’s Guide’s 2025 best memory foam: deeper pressure relief and better cooling than the Classic.
Read the full Nectar Premier Memory Foam review →Performance (0–10)
6/10 · Medium-firm — Testers 5.5–6; RTINGS Medium (45 Pa/mm).
If you share a bed with a restless partner, motion isolation is the sub-score to care about, and nothing in our database beats the Nectar Premier’s 8.8 (the Nectar Premier Hybrid ties it). Sleep Foundation scored both motion and pressure relief 9.0, and Tom’s Guide named it the best memory foam mattress in its 2025 Sleep Awards. RTINGS measured cooling of 8.0, notably cooler than the cheaper all-foam Nectar Classic.
Two trade-offs. Edges compress (6.2), so couples who sprawl to the sides lose usable surface. And it is too soft for heavier back and stomach sleepers; Mattress Clarity called it weak for stomach sleepers. Couples who want both motion isolation and strong edges should look at the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid (motion 8.6, edge 8.5). Compare the two brands in Nectar vs DreamCloud, or see all options in our best mattress for couples guide.

Mattresses we left out & why
A best list is only useful if it says no. These popular beds are in our database and many of them are good, but each loses its category to something on the list above.
- Saatva Classic — the most-awarded mattress here (Tom’s Guide #1, Forbes Vetted’s top back-pain pick, Sleep Foundation 9.5) and our pick if you want a traditional hotel-bed innerspring. It misses the main list because RTINGS measured weak durability (5.1–5.7) and motion isolation that Mattress Clarity scored just 2.6/5. Read our Saatva review.
- Saatva Rx — excellent pressure relief (8.0) and RTINGS positional scores of 7.9 side and 7.8 back, but over $3,000, with edges of 5.3 and longevity of 5.0. Our upgrade pick for chronic back pain only.
- Saatva Zenhaven — flippable all-latex, very durable (8.3), but the priciest bed on our list, with motion isolation of 5.0.
- Puffy Lux, Royal and Cloud — the Lux is a strong side-sleeper bed (RTINGS 7.8 for side sleepers, 8.9 for heavier side sleepers), but the DreamCloud Premier does the same job for less. The Royal costs about $2,449 with RTINGS longevity of 5.1, and the Cloud trails on cooling and edges. See our Puffy review.
- Bear Natural — durable and cool, but motion isolation is 4.5, the worst in our database. Bad for couples.
- Bear Original and Bear Pro Hybrid — good firm beds for back and stomach sleepers, but the Bear Elite does more for the money, and the Original’s pressure relief (6.0) rules out side sleepers. Details in our Bear review.
- Nectar Classic, Luxe and Premier Hybrid — all decent; each is beaten by its sibling on the list. The Classic is better value but sleeps warmer; the Luxe adds plushness but scores lower on edges; the Premier Hybrid has surprisingly soft edges (6.3). See our Nectar review.
- DreamCloud Luxe Hybrid and Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid — good, but each costs more than a sibling that measures as well or better.
- Zinus Green Tea, Siena and Linenspa — fine for guest rooms on tight budgets, not for nightly use as your main bed. NapLab placed the Zinus in the bottom 2% of 350 mattresses it tested. Our budget guide covers them properly.
Best mattress brands in 2026
A great mattress from a brand with bad service can still be a bad purchase, because the warranty is only worth what the company will honour. Here is how the five brands behind our picks compare on independent owner platforms — read Trustpilot as a service signal, since unhappy customers are far more likely to post there.

Saatva has the best service record of the premium brands: 3.5 stars on Trustpilot from 1,386 reviews and an A+ BBB rating, though returns cost $99. Bear scores highest on Trustpilot at 4.5 stars, but from a smaller sample of 151. Nectar (1.4 stars) and DreamCloud (1.9 stars), both owned by Resident, make excellent-value beds with weak independent service ratings; GoodBed’s much larger samples put them at 3.8 and 3.9. Puffy is polarised, with 46% five-star and 44% one-star reviews. Our rule: buy the best bed, but buy it from a brand whose trial you understand, and keep your receipt and photos.
Which mattress reviews can you trust?
Search for mattress reviews and you will find hundreds of sites that all seem to rank the same handful of beds. Some of that agreement is real; some of it is affiliate economics. Here is how we weigh each kind of source, so you can apply the same filter elsewhere.
Lab measurements carry the most weight. RTINGS buys its mattresses and runs the same instrumented tests on each one — firmness in pascals per millimetre, pressure mapping, temperature, motion transfer and edge compression. Those numbers are repeatable, which is why they form the backbone of our sub-scores. They are not perfect: RTINGS found two different coil designs sold under the Saatva Classic name, a reminder that a mattress can change after it is tested.
Expert reviews are useful but noisy. Outlets such as Sleep Foundation, Mattress Clarity and Sleepopolis use panels of testers of different weights, which helps — but their firmness ratings often disagree by a point or more. The Puffy Cloud has been rated anywhere from 5 to 7. We average across outlets rather than trusting any single verdict, and we treat “best of” awards as a signal of consensus, not proof.
Owner reviews are the most misleading if read naively. Brand websites show 4.8 or 4.9 stars on almost everything — Nectar’s figure is pooled across more than 55,000 reviews site-wide. Independent platforms swing the other way, because unhappy customers are the most likely to post. Neither is the truth on its own. We down-weight brand widgets heavily and read independent ratings mainly for patterns: if the same complaint (sagging within a year, slow warranty claims) appears again and again, we take it seriously.
Be wary of “independent” reviews hosted by the brand. Puffy, for example, hosts lab-style reviews from third parties on its own domain. Treat anything on a seller’s website as marketing, however neutral it sounds.
How to choose the most comfortable mattress for you
The most comfortable mattress is not a single model — it is the right firmness for your body and sleep position, in a construction that suits how hot you run and whether you share the bed. Get firmness right and almost any well-reviewed bed on this page will feel good. Get it wrong and the best-scoring mattress in the world will hurt.
Target firmness by sleep position and body weight (1–10)
The same targets our quiz uses. ±1 point is fine. Lighter bodies feel every mattress as firmer than heavier bodies do.
| Position | Under 130 lb | 130–230 lb | Over 230 lb | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Side | 4 · Medium-soft | 5 · Medium | 6 · Medium-firm | Shoulders and hips must sink in |
| Back | 5.5 · Medium | 6.5 · Medium-firm | 7.5 · Firm | Keep the hips from dipping |
| Stomach | 6.5 · Medium-firm | 7.5 · Firm | 8.5 · Extra firm | Hips are the heaviest point — firm wins |
| Combination | 5 · Medium | 6 · Medium-firm | 7 · Firm | Pick bounce so turning is easy |
Start with sleep position. Side sleepers need softer beds so the shoulder and hip can sink in; Sleep Foundation’s firmness guide places most side sleepers between medium-soft and medium-firm depending on weight. Back sleepers do best around medium-firm, which also lines up with the clinical evidence on low-back pain. Stomach sleepers need firm beds so the hips don’t sag and arch the lower back. Combination sleepers should prioritise bounce, which is why coil hybrids suit them better than slow memory foam.
Then adjust for weight. Firmness is relative. A 120 lb sleeper sinks less and experiences any mattress as firmer than a 250 lb sleeper does. That’s why testers’ firmness numbers disagree so often — the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid has been measured anywhere from 6 to 7.5 — and why we lean on RTINGS’ objective pascals-per-millimetre readings. If you weigh over 230 lb, choose a hybrid with real coils and go a step firmer; all-foam beds wear faster under heavier bodies.
Choose a construction. Hybrids (foam or latex over pocketed coils) sleep cooler, bounce more and have better edges. Memory foam isolates motion best and contours most, but traps more heat and is slower to move on. Latex is the most durable and naturally cool, at a price. Innersprings like the Saatva Classic feel like a hotel bed. Our memory foam vs hybrid guide goes deeper.
Check the boring stuff. Look at the trial length and any return fee, the warranty’s sag threshold (DreamCloud and Nectar only cover dips deeper than 1.5 inches), whether the bed fits your frame, and your room size — our mattress sizes guide has every dimension. Answer six questions and our finder scores all 25 mattresses in our database against your target firmness, budget and priorities, using the same sub-scores as the rankings above. It is a starting point, not a diagnosis — but it is a much better one than a brand’s own quiz, which only recommends its own beds.

Best mattress FAQ
What is the best mattress to buy in 2026?
For most people, the Saatva Latex Hybrid. It has the highest Research Score in our database (8.5/10), with RTINGS measuring 8.6 for cooling, 9.1 for edge support and 8.3 for longevity. If your budget is under $1,000, buy the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid (~$699 queen) instead.
What is the most comfortable mattress?
Comfort depends on your sleep position and weight. For side sleepers, the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid has the best pressure relief we track (8.2). For back and combination sleepers, the Bear Elite Hybrid in Medium or the Saatva Classic in Luxury Firm. For a plush hotel feel, the DreamCloud Luxe Hybrid or Saatva Classic Plush Soft.
What is the best mattress in a box?
The DreamCloud Classic Hybrid. Tom’s Guide names it its top bed-in-a-box and best mattress under $1,000, and RTINGS measured edge support and responsiveness of 9.0 each. It costs about $699 for a queen with a 365-night trial.
What are the top rated mattress brands?
On measured performance, Saatva, DreamCloud, Bear and Nectar all make category-winning beds. On independent service ratings, Bear (4.5★ Trustpilot) and Saatva (3.5★, A+ BBB) lead; Nectar (1.4★) and DreamCloud (1.9★) make great-value beds but have weaker service reviews.
Is a firm or soft mattress better?
Neither is better for everyone. The strongest clinical evidence — a 313-person randomised trial in The Lancet (Kovacs, 2003) — found medium-firm mattresses beat firm ones for people with chronic low-back pain. Side sleepers usually need softer; stomach sleepers firmer.
How long should a mattress last?
Typically 6 to 8 years, but it varies by material. RTINGS gives most foam-topped beds longevity scores of 5–6/10, while latex beds like the Saatva Latex Hybrid and Zenhaven score 8.3. Replace a mattress when it sags, you wake sore, or you sleep better elsewhere.
Are expensive mattresses worth it?
Sometimes. In RTINGS’ tests the $699 DreamCloud Classic Hybrid matches or beats the $1,895 Saatva Classic on edge support, cooling and pressure relief. Extra money mainly buys durability (latex), firmness choice, white-glove delivery and better service.
Do you test these mattresses yourselves?
No. We aggregate published lab measurements (mainly RTINGS), expert reviews and owner ratings, and weight them with the formula on our How we rate page. Every number on this page links to its source.
