The short verdict: the best mattress for stomach sleepers
The best mattress for stomach sleepers is the Saatva Latex Hybrid. RTINGS measured it as genuinely firm (60 Pa/mm) and gave it a stomach-sleeper score of 7.7, tied for the highest in our database. It also has the best longevity score we track (8.3), so it holds that firmness for years — which matters more for stomach sleepers than anyone, because a sagging bed is exactly what bends your back. It costs about $2,346 for a queen.
If you want a firm bed for less, the Nectar Classic Hybrid (around $849) is the best stomach-sleeper bed under $900: RTINGS scored it 7.0 for stomach sleepers and Sleep Foundation rated it firm. On a tight budget, the Bear Original is a firm foam bed for about $699. If you run hot, the Bear Elite Hybrid in Firm pairs a firm feel with award-winning cooling. And if you weigh over 300 lb, the Saatva HD is the only bed here built for you.

Is sleeping on your stomach bad?
Short answer: it is the position doctors and physical therapists like least, but it is not the disaster many articles make it sound. Both halves of that sentence matter when you are choosing a mattress.
The clinical case against it is consistent. A Cleveland Clinic chiropractor says stomach sleeping “throws your alignment off by flattening and abnormally twisting your spine’s ideal curve,” and that it adds stress to the lower back. To breathe face-down you have to turn your head to one side and hold it there for hours, which is why he links the position to neck soreness. Physical therapists at Hinge Health make the same point about the lower back: “lying on your stomach naturally increases the curve in your lower back.”
The hard evidence is thinner. A 2019 scoping review in BMJ Open by Cary, Briffa and McKenna searched 4,186 articles for studies linking sleep posture to spinal symptoms and found only four that qualified. It describes prone sleeping as “clinically believed to increase load on spinal tissues” — a belief, not a measured result. The largest study in that review, by Gordon and colleagues with 812 participants, found prone sleeping was not significantly associated with waking neck pain or stiffness. A later study by the same group, published in PLoS One in 2021, filmed 53 adults sleeping at home. People who woke with neck symptoms spent 36.0% of the night in “provocative” postures — prone or twisted three-quarter side lying — against 17.8% for people without symptoms. It was a small, cross-sectional study, so it shows an association, not a cause.
Is stomach sleeping bad? What the studies show
The clinical advice is consistent; the hard evidence is thinner than most articles admit.
‘Provocative’ in Cary 2021 combines prone and twisted three-quarter side lying. Cross-sectional — it can’t show cause.
Hinge Health’s physical therapists put it plainly: “Sleeping on your stomach doesn’t automatically lead to pain or injury.” Our reading is that stomach sleeping raises the stakes rather than guaranteeing a problem. If you wake up without pain, you do not need to retrain yourself. What you do need is a bed that removes the one thing that reliably makes prone sleeping worse — hips that sink. That is what the rest of this guide is about.
There is one possible upside. A 2013 systematic review by Menon and Kumar concluded that “supine sleep posture is consistently associated with more severe obstructive sleep apnea indices in adults.” In other words, lying on your back is the worst position for apnea. But the same review found the link between apnea and prone posture “inconsistent,” because very few studies have looked at it. Don’t choose stomach sleeping to treat snoring or apnea; talk to a doctor about that instead.
You are also in a small minority. In the best objective data we have — Skarpsno and colleagues fitted 664 Danish working adults with accelerometers — people spent 54.1% of their time in bed on their side, 37.5% on their back and only 7.3% on their front. Men spent a little more time face-down (8.3%) than women (6.2%). The spread was wide, though: most people barely use the position, while a smaller group spends much of the night there. If you are in that group, you need a different bed from the one most guides recommend.
How much of the night people actually spend on their stomach
664 Danish working adults wearing accelerometers on the thigh, upper back and arm (Skarpsno et al., 2017). Share of time in bed.
Front-position spread was wide (SD 12.3 points): most people barely use it, a minority spend much of the night there. Small bars use a 0–10% axis.
What stomach sleepers need from a mattress
Lie face-down and your weight is not spread evenly. The pelvis and abdomen are the heaviest part of the torso, and they sit in the middle of your body. On a soft mattress, that middle section sinks deeper than your chest and legs. Because your face is pointing down, the sag pushes the lower back into extension — the swayback arch the Cleveland Clinic and Hinge Health describe. Add a head turned hard to one side and a thick pillow that tilts it back, and you have a spine bent in two places at once.
Why stomach sleepers need firmer support
Simplified side view. The pelvis is the heaviest part of the torso; on a soft bed it sinks and pulls the lower back into an arch. Dashed line = spine.
Illustration, not to scale. Mechanism described by Cleveland Clinic and Hinge Health physical therapists (see Sources).
That gives stomach sleepers a clear checklist, and it looks almost like the opposite of a side sleeper’s:
- A firm, even surface. The bed has to hold your hips roughly level with your shoulders. That means a firm or medium-firm feel measured by testers, not just claimed on a label.
- A thin comfort layer. Deep pillow-tops and thick memory foam are where hips sink. A couple of inches of foam over a firm core is enough for a stomach sleeper.
- Strong support in the middle third. Zoned coils or a reinforced lumbar section help because the middle is where the load is.
- Durability. A mattress that sags under the hips after two years recreates the too-soft problem. Longevity scores matter more on this page than on any other.
- Responsiveness and breathability. Your face and chest are pressed into the surface, so a slow, warm foam that you sink into can feel stuffy. Coils, latex and gel-infused tops sleep cooler and push back faster.
What stomach sleepers don’t need much of is deep pressure relief. The parts of you touching the mattress — chest, ribs, hip bones and knees — are broad and carry modest load compared with a side sleeper’s shoulder. That is why beds that win side-sleeper guides, like the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid or the Puffy Lux, often finish near the bottom here.
Firm mattress for stomach sleepers: the right firmness by body weight
Every serious guide agrees that stomach sleepers should go firmer than side or back sleepers of the same weight. Sleep Foundation’s general firmness advice says back and stomach sleepers should usually sit a point or two above side sleepers. Mattress Clarity publishes a more specific table, and it is the clearest set of numbers we have found for stomach sleepers. Its stomach-sleeper targets by body weight are shown below, with the side-sleeper band for contrast.
Stomach sleepers: firmness target by body weight
Mattress Clarity’s firmness table (1 = softest, 10 = firmest). Side-sleeper band shown for contrast.
Three practical rules come out of that chart. First, if you weigh under 130 lb, don’t buy the firmest bed you can find. You barely compress a mattress, so a bed rated 7 will feel firm already and an 8 will feel like the floor. Something in the 6 to 7.5 range — the Nectar Classic Hybrid, the Bear Pro Hybrid, or the Bear Elite Hybrid in Medium — is the right zone.
Second, between 130 and 230 lb, aim for 7 to 8. This is where the Saatva Latex Hybrid, the Bear Elite Hybrid in Firm and the Saatva Classic in Firm sit. If the bed you like is a medium-firm 6.5, check its measured firmness before you buy. Brand labels drift: DreamCloud labels its Classic Hybrid firm, but RTINGS measured it as medium-plush (39 Pa/mm).
Third, over 230 lb, go for 8 or above, and favour coils and latex over foam. A heavier stomach sleeper sinks through a comfort layer quickly and then wears it out. The Saatva HD is designed for 300 to 500 lb; the Saatva Latex Hybrid is our pick from about 230 to 300 lb. Our best mattress for heavy people guide goes deeper on weight ratings.
How we picked: we started with every bed in our database that RTINGS scored at least 7.0 for stomach sleepers, or that two or more independent testers rated firm (7 or above). Then we checked support sub-scores, longevity, and whether experts specifically recommend each bed for stomach sleeping. Beds that only work for one weight group are labelled. The full method is on our How we rate page.
Stomach sleeper mattress scores compared
RTINGS is the only lab that publishes a separate score for stomach sleepers on every bed it tests, so it is our anchor for this page. Here is every RTINGS stomach score we hold. Anything at 7.5 or above is a strong stomach-sleeper bed; below 7, expect your hips to sink at least a little.
RTINGS stomach-sleeper scores (0–10)
Every RTINGS stomach score we hold. Blue bars clear 7.5. Firmness in Pa/mm is RTINGS’ measured value — higher is firmer.
Axis starts at 5. RTINGS has not published stomach scores for the Bear, Saatva HD or Saatva Classic Firm models on this page.
Two things stand out. The Saatva Latex Hybrid and the Saatva Rx tie at 7.7, but for different reasons: the Latex Hybrid is firm all over, while the Rx is a medium bed with a reinforced lumbar zone. That makes the Rx a better fit for lighter people who also sleep on their side, and the Latex Hybrid the better fit for most stomach sleepers. The second point is the Saatva Classic: in its popular Luxury Firm version it scores only 6.5 for stomach sleeping. If you buy a Classic for stomach sleeping, buy the Firm option, which testers put around 8.
RTINGS has not tested the Bear models or the Saatva HD, so for those we lean on Sleep Foundation, Sleepopolis and Mattress Clarity firmness ratings. All three outlets rate the Bear Original firm (about 7), Sleep Foundation rates the Bear Elite’s Firm option an 8, and testers under 230 lb found the Saatva HD firm at 7 to 8.

6.5/10 · Medium-firm — Brand says Medium Firm (6), ‘best suited for back and stomach sleepers’; RTINGS measured Firm (60 Pa/mm).
The Saatva Latex Hybrid does the one thing a stomach sleeper needs better than any other bed in our database: it stays firm and level under the hips, night after night. RTINGS measured it as firm (60 Pa/mm), firmer than Saatva’s own medium-firm label, and scored it 7.7 for stomach sleepers and 7.6 for back sleepers. Its support sub-score is 7.7, and Sleep Foundation scored it 9.6 overall.
Durability is the clincher. RTINGS rated its longevity 8.3, the highest of any mattress we track, and Sleep Foundation gave durability 9.5. Latex is springy and slow to wear, so the surface that keeps your hips up in year one should still be doing it in year six. It is also the coolest Saatva RTINGS has tested (8.6), which helps when your chest and face are pressed into the bed, and its edge support (9.1) is excellent.
The drawbacks: it is firm for lightweight sleepers, and Mattress Clarity scored it only 3.9/5 because of limited contouring. At about $2,346 it is expensive, and Saatva deducts $99 from returns. If you weigh under 130 lb, the Nectar Classic Hybrid will feel better. Everyone else should start here. See every Saatva model in our Saatva review.

Bear Elite Hybrid
RTINGS’ best medium-firm mattress for most people: three firmnesses, near-perfect edges, great cooling.

6/10 · Medium-firm — Medium tested (RTINGS Medium-Firm, 51 Pa/mm). Soft ≈5, Firm ≈7–8.
The Bear Elite Hybrid comes in Soft, Medium and Firm, and Sleep Foundation rated them 5, 6 and 8. For stomach sleepers between 130 and 230 lb, the Firm is the one to buy. RTINGS named the Medium the best medium-firm mattress for most people in 2026, and measured edge support of 9.7 — the best in our database — plus responsiveness of 9.4, so it is very easy to roll on and off.
It earns this slot because of cooling. Tom’s Guide named it the Best Cooling Mattress in its 2025 Sleep Awards, and RTINGS measured cooling of 7.9. Stomach sleepers who overheat on foam beds tend to like it. Forbes Vetted scored its pressure relief 9/10, which matters for stomach sleepers who sometimes roll to their side.
The big caveat is durability. RTINGS rated its longevity only 4.3 because of foam density, the lowest score among our picks. That is a real risk for a stomach sleeper, so register the warranty and rotate the bed. At about $1,599 it costs less than the Saatva Latex Hybrid but won’t last as long. More in our Bear review.

Saatva Classic
The most-awarded luxury innerspring: coil-on-coil support, Euro top, three firmnesses, white-glove delivery.

6.5/10 · Medium-firm — Luxury Firm (most popular). Also Plush Soft (Saatva’s label ~3; RTINGS measured 39 Pa/mm, medium-plush) and Firm (~8). RTINGS’ 43 Pa/mm Luxury Firm reading is from a double-pocket-coil unit; the official continuous-coil build tested medium-firm.
The Saatva Classic is a coil-on-coil innerspring with a quilted Euro top, and it comes in three firmnesses. The scores on this card describe Luxury Firm, the most popular choice — and the wrong one for most stomach sleepers. RTINGS scored Luxury Firm only 6.5 for stomach sleeping. The Firm option, which testers put around 8, is the version to buy if you sleep face-down and want a traditional hotel-style bed.
Innerspring support suits stomach sleepers: the coils push back evenly and the bed sleeps cool — Sleep Foundation gave temperature control 10/10 and edge support 8.5. Tom’s Guide ranks the Classic #1 in its best mattress guide, and Forbes Vetted named it its top pick for back pain. Saatva delivers and sets it up, and will remove your old mattress.
Weaknesses: motion isolation is poor (Mattress Clarity 2.6/5), RTINGS rated longevity just 5.1 to 5.7, and RTINGS found two coil designs sold under the same name. At about $1,895 it costs less than the Latex Hybrid, but the Latex Hybrid is the better stomach-sleeper bed if you don’t specifically want innerspring. If you are weighing it against a cheaper boxed hybrid, read Saatva vs DreamCloud.

6.5/10 · Medium-firm — Testers 5.5–7; RTINGS Medium-Firm (56 Pa/mm).
The Nectar Classic Hybrid is the most affordable bed that RTINGS scored at least 7.0 for stomach sleepers. RTINGS measured it as medium-firm (56 Pa/mm), Sleep Foundation rated it firm (7), and it costs about $849 for a queen. That firmness lands right in the band Mattress Clarity recommends for lighter stomach sleepers, and it is close enough for average weights who don’t want a hard bed.
It is a good couples’ bed: motion isolation measured 8.6, and Sleepopolis recommends it for back sleepers, couples and hot sleepers. Mattress Clarity named it a top hybrid pick for cooling, and Sleep Foundation scored temperature 8. The coils make it more supportive than the all-foam Nectar Classic, which RTINGS scored 7.1 for stomach sleepers but which sleeps warmer and has weaker edges.
Drawbacks: firmness reports vary from 5.5 to 7, RTINGS flagged lower-quality memory foam, and longevity is 5.7. It is a strong value buy rather than a ten-year bed. Read our Nectar review for the full lineup.

Bear Original

7/10 · Firm — Testers 6.5–8; most say firm.
The Bear Original is a firm gel memory foam bed for about $699, and it is firm by every account we have: Sleep Foundation rated it 7, Sleepopolis 7, and testers overall ranged 6.5 to 8. Its support sub-score is 7.2, higher than several beds that cost twice as much. Sleep Foundation ranks it its #2 best cheap mattress, and Sleepopolis scored it 4.5/5.
For a stomach sleeper, its weakness as a side-sleeper bed — limited pressure relief (6.0) — doesn’t matter much. What does matter is heat: Sleep Foundation scored temperature 6/10 and our cooling sub-score is 5.5, so it is not the bed for hot sleepers. Edges are weak too. It is not built for people over 230 lb.
If you need to go even cheaper, RTINGS measured the Zinus Green Tea as firm (69 Pa/mm) and called it a budget bed for back and stomach sleepers. But NapLab placed it in the bottom 2% of 350 mattresses it tested, so treat it as a guest-room bed. Our best budget mattress guide covers more options.

#6 · Best for heavier stomach sleepers (300 lb+)
Saatva HD
Purpose-built for 300–500 lb sleepers: heavy-gauge coils, zoned latex, rated 500 lb per side (full size and up).

7/10 · Firm — Saatva rates it Medium Firm (5–7) for sleepers over 300 lb and says those under 300 lb ‘might find it firmer’; average-weight testers measured 7–8.
Heavier stomach sleepers face the problem on this page at full strength: more weight sinks the hips further, and soft foams wear out faster. The Saatva HD is built for exactly that. It is rated to 500 lb per side, uses heavy-gauge coils with zoned natural latex for lumbar support, and has the highest support sub-score among our picks (8.3).
Expert scores are strong: Sleep Foundation gave it 9.2 with pressure relief and durability of 8.5 each, Sleepopolis scored it 4.7/5 and measured 7/10 firm, and TechRadar named it its best premium mattress for heavy people. Don’t buy it if you are average weight — Mattress Clarity’s testers found it 8/10 firm, because it is tuned to feel medium-firm under a much heavier body.
At about $3,094 plus the recommended HD Foundation, it is expensive, motion isolation is below average (6.0), and the $99 return fee applies. Between 230 and 300 lb, the Saatva Latex Hybrid is a cheaper alternative.

#7 · Best for stomach + side sleepers with aches
Saatva Rx
A therapeutic innerspring for chronic back and joint pain: graphite- and PCM-infused Rx Wave-Tech foam over an 8″ comfort coil unit, a gel memory-foam lumbar crown and high-density foam rails.
Read the full Saatva Rx review →Performance (0–10)
5/10 · Medium — Brand ‘Supportive Plush’ (3–4), ideal for side, back and combination sleepers (stomach sleepers only under 130 lb); testers range 4–6.5; RTINGS measured Medium and classifies it as an innerspring (two coil layers).
The Saatva Rx is the oddity on this list: a medium bed, not a firm one. It is here because RTINGS scored it 7.7 for stomach sleepers, 7.9 for side sleepers and 7.8 for back sleepers — the most even set of position scores we hold. That makes it the best bed for lighter and average-weight people who start on their stomach and end up on their side, especially if they already have back or joint pain.
The trick is a lumbar zone of gel memory foam over micro-coils, which supports the middle of the body while letting the shoulders sink when you roll to your side. RTINGS measured pressure relief of 8.0 and support of 7.7, and Tom’s Guide recommends it over the Saatva Classic for chronic back pain.
It is not for heavier stomach sleepers, and edges (5.3) and longevity (5.0) are weak. At about $3,094 it is the most expensive way to solve the combination-sleeper problem; the Bear Elite Hybrid in Medium costs about half as much.

Best mattress for stomach and back sleepers, stomach and side sleepers, and couples
Few people sleep in one position all night. The accelerometer study above recorded 1.6 position shifts per hour on average. So the useful question isn’t just whether you sleep on your stomach, but what else you do. Use this matrix to narrow it down.
Stomach + another position: which bed to buy
Our picks by how you split the night and how much you weigh. Find your row, then your column.
| You sleep… | Under 130 lb | 130–230 lb | Over 230 lb |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stomach only | Nectar Classic Hybrid | Saatva Latex Hybrid | Saatva Latex Hybrid (to ~300 lb) · Saatva HD (300 lb+) |
| Stomach + back | Nectar Classic Hybrid | Bear Elite Hybrid (Firm) or Saatva Classic (Firm) | Saatva HD |
| Stomach + side | Bear Elite Hybrid (Medium) | Saatva Rx | Saatva Latex Hybrid |
| Tight budget | Bear Original | Bear Original | Nectar Classic Hybrid |
Stomach and back sleepers have it easiest, because both positions want a firm, flat surface. Pick by weight and budget: the Bear Elite Hybrid in Firm or the Saatva Classic in Firm for average weights, the Nectar Classic Hybrid for lighter people, and the Saatva HD over 300 lb. Our best mattress for back sleepers guide covers the back-sleeping half in more detail.
Stomach and side sleepers face a genuine conflict: the side wants softness at the shoulder, the stomach wants firmness at the hip. The answer is a medium-firm bed with zoning or a supportive core, not a compromise you average out. The Saatva Rx is the data-backed choice. The Bear Elite Hybrid in Medium is the cheaper one: RTINGS measured it at 51 Pa/mm, medium-firm, with excellent responsiveness. If you are heavier and sleep on both your side and stomach, the Saatva Latex Hybrid works because heavier bodies sink enough to get shoulder relief — RTINGS scored it 8.5 for heavier side sleepers.
Undecided between firm and medium? The Saatva Zenhaven is flippable all-latex, with a Luxury Plush side (about 4 to 5) and a Gentle Firm side (about 7 to 7.5). Sleepopolis measured the two sides at 6 and 7.5. Sleep on the firm side as a stomach sleeper and flip it if your needs change. It is very durable (Sleep Foundation durability 9) but expensive at about $3,145, with weak motion isolation and edges.
Couples where one partner sleeps on their stomach should let the stomach sleeper’s needs set the floor. A bed that is too soft for them causes back pain; a bed that is a touch firm for a side-sleeping partner can be fixed with a topper. The Nectar Classic Hybrid is the best compromise here because its motion isolation (8.6) is excellent. See our best mattress for couples guide for more, and our mattress topper guide if one of you needs a softer surface.
Best mattress for stomach sleepers with back pain
If you sleep on your stomach and your lower back hurts, the first suspect is a mattress that lets your hips sink. Check the bed before anything else: if there is a visible dip under where your hips lie, or the mattress is more than about 6 to 8 years old — Sleep Foundation’s typical lifespan — replacing it is likely to help more than any pillow trick.
For a new bed, our pick is the Saatva Latex Hybrid: firm, with a support score of 7.7 and the longevity to stay that way. But don’t assume firmer is always better. The best clinical evidence on mattresses and back pain, Kovacs and colleagues’ 2003 trial in The Lancet, randomised 313 adults with chronic low-back pain and found that a medium-firm mattress beat a firm one on pain in bed and disability at 90 days. A 2021 review of 39 studies by Caggiari and colleagues reached a similar conclusion in favour of medium-firm.
Those trials didn’t isolate stomach sleepers, and stomach sleeping is the one position where clinicians most often advise going firmer. Our practical reading: stomach sleepers with back pain should aim for the firmer end of medium-firm — around 7 — rather than a rock-hard 9. That is the Saatva Latex Hybrid, the Bear Elite Hybrid in Firm, or the Nectar Classic Hybrid on a budget. If you also sleep on your side and have joint pain, the Saatva Rx is the better fit. Our best mattress for back pain guide covers the trial evidence in depth.
Pillows and sleep setup for stomach sleepers
The mattress takes care of the hips. The pillow takes care of the neck, and stomach sleepers usually get it wrong by using the same thick pillow as everyone else. Here is what the physical therapists and clinicians we cite recommend:
- Use a very thin head pillow, or none. A thick pillow tilts your already-turned head backwards. Hinge Health’s physical therapists suggest skipping the head pillow altogether if it pushes your neck into an uncomfortable angle.
- Put a thin pillow under your pelvis. Hinge Health recommends a pillow under the pelvis to reduce lower-back arching. It does the same job as a firmer mattress, and it costs nothing to try tonight.
- Try a pillow under your shins. Hinge Health also suggests this as another way to ease tension in the lower back.
- Alternate which way you face. Spending every night turned the same way loads the same side of the neck for hours.
- Consider the “half-stomach” position. Drawing one knee up and rolling slightly onto that side reduces both the neck rotation and the lower-back arch. It is a stepping stone if you want to move toward side sleeping.
If you want to stop stomach sleeping entirely, the Cleveland Clinic suggests placing pillows as bumpers so you can’t roll onto your front, and warns that it takes practice. There is no need to force it if you wake up comfortable. A better setup is the realistic goal for most people.
Finally, use the trial. Every pick on this page has a trial of at least 365 nights, and a body needs a few weeks to adjust. If your lower back aches after a month, the bed is too soft for you — go firmer. If your hips and knees feel bruised, or you wake up stiff all over, it may be too firm, especially if you are under 130 lb. Our how to choose a mattress guide explains how to use a trial well.
Mattresses stomach sleepers should skip
These beds are good at other jobs, but the evidence says they let a stomach sleeper’s hips sink:
- DreamCloud Premier Hybrid — our favourite side-sleeper bed, but RTINGS measured it medium-plush (36 Pa/mm) and calls it too soft for most back and stomach sleepers.
- Puffy Lux Hybrid — testers rated it 5 to 5.5, and Sleep Foundation says it is not for stomach sleepers.
- DreamCloud Luxe Hybrid — a 14-inch pillow-top with weak back and stomach scores at RTINGS.
- Nectar Premier and Nectar Luxe — deep memory foam; Mattress Clarity says the Premier is weak for stomach sleepers.
- Puffy Royal Hybrid — Sleepopolis says it is not for stomach or combination sleepers.
- DreamCloud Classic Hybrid — a near miss. RTINGS scored it 6.9 for stomach sleepers and Tom’s Guide says it is a little soft for them. Fine for lighter combination sleepers; not for strict stomach sleepers.
The pattern is simple: if a bed is famous for “cradling” or “hugging”, it is probably the wrong bed for you. Look instead for words like firm, supportive and responsive — and check the measured firmness before you trust the label. Stomach sleeper mattress FAQ
What is the best mattress for stomach sleepers?
The Saatva Latex Hybrid for most people. RTINGS measured it as firm (60 Pa/mm) and scored it 7.7 for stomach sleepers, and its longevity score of 8.3 is the best we track. On a budget, the Nectar Classic Hybrid (about $849) or the Bear Original (about $699).
What firmness is best for stomach sleepers?
Firmer than for side or back sleepers. Mattress Clarity’s table suggests 6 to 7.5 under 130 lb, 7 to 8 between 130 and 230 lb, and 8 to 10 over 230 lb. Lighter people should avoid the very firmest beds.
Is sleeping on your stomach bad?
Clinicians advise against it because it arches the lower back and keeps the neck turned. But the research is thin: a 2019 review found only four relevant studies, and the largest found no significant link between prone sleeping and waking neck pain. If you wake up comfortable, focus on a firm mattress and a thin pillow rather than forcing a change.
Should stomach sleepers have a soft or firm mattress?
Firm or medium-firm. A soft mattress lets the heavy pelvis sink, which arches the lower back. Lightweight stomach sleepers under 130 lb can use a medium-firm bed (around 6 to 7.5) instead of a truly firm one.
What is the best mattress for stomach sleepers with back pain?
The Saatva Latex Hybrid, which RTINGS scored 7.7 for stomach sleepers with a support score of 7.7. Aim for about 7 out of 10 rather than extra firm: the best back-pain trial, Kovacs 2003, found medium-firm beat firm overall.
What is the best mattress for stomach and back sleepers?
Both positions want a firm, flat surface, so pick by weight: the Bear Elite Hybrid in Firm or the Saatva Classic in Firm for average weights, the Nectar Classic Hybrid for lighter people, and the Saatva HD over 300 lb.
What pillow should a stomach sleeper use?
A very thin pillow or none under the head, so your turned neck isn’t tilted back. Physical therapists also suggest a thin pillow under the pelvis to reduce lower-back arching.
