The short answer
The best king size mattress for most people is the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid. A king costs $1,369 at DreamCloud’s checkout, and it is one of very few beds in our database that RTINGS measured at 8.5 or better on both edge support (8.5) and motion isolation (8.6) — the two scores that decide whether a king actually feels like a king. Strong edges let you use the full 76 inches; good motion isolation means the extra width actually keeps a restless partner’s movement away from you.
If you want the bed that the big review sites crown, it’s the Saatva Classic: both Tom’s Guide and TechRadar name it the best king size mattress overall in 2026. It costs more (list $2,729 for the 11.5″ king), transfers more motion, and it is the only pick here that arrives with free white-glove setup — useful when a king Saatva Classic weighs 130 to 145 lb. If you two disagree on firmness, the Bear Elite Hybrid is our split king pick: two Twin XLs, each in Soft, Medium or Firm, with the best edge support we track (9.7).

Width per person vs queen
38″ each on a king, 30″ on a queen
The opinion we’ll stand behind: on a king, edge support matters more than it does on any other size. You’re paying for 16 extra inches of width over a queen. A bed whose outer six inches slump under you hands much of that back, which is why every one of our top four picks scores 8.2 or higher on edges. Need the dimensions first? Our mattress sizes guide covers every size in inches and centimetres; this page is about which king to buy.
Best king size mattresses at a glance
Seven picks, ranked on edge support and motion isolation first, then support, cooling, durability and the price you’ll actually pay for a king. Card prices are queen prices; king prices are in the next section.
#1 · Best king size mattress overall
DreamCloud Premier Hybrid
King $1,369. Edges 8.5 and motion 8.6 — usable full width, and you won’t feel your partner. Split king $1,798.
#2 · Best luxury king (Tom’s Guide & TechRadar #1)
Saatva Classic
Three firmnesses, two heights, edges 8.2 and free white-glove setup for a 130–145 lb bed. Motion isolation is its weak spot.
#3 · Best split king mattress
Bear Elite Hybrid
Order two Twin XLs in different firmnesses. Edges 9.7, cooling 7.9; works on adjustable bases. Longevity is the catch (4.3).
#4 · Best value king
DreamCloud Classic Hybrid
King just $899, edges 9.0. Tom’s Guide’s best value hybrid king and TechRadar’s king for couples.
#5 · Best king for motion isolation
Nectar Premier Memory Foam
Motion 8.8 — joint-best we track — for $1,099 in king. Soft edges matter less on a 76″ bed.
#6 · Best king for durability & cooling
Saatva Latex Hybrid
Longevity 8.3, cooling 8.6, edges 9.1. Firm and expensive (list $3,279 king), but built to last.
#7 · Best cheap king size mattress
Siena Memory Foam
$399 king direct from Siena; split king $498. A starter or guest king, not a forever bed.
King mattress price: what each pick really costs
Almost every “best king size mattress” list quotes queen prices, which is useless if you’re buying a king. So we read the king, California king and split king price off every brand’s own size selector on 27 October 2026. The ladder below shows the king price you’d pay at checkout, the inflated “list” or “total value” price it’s discounted from, and how much more the split king costs.
King mattress price ladder (October 2026)
Solid bar = king price at the brand’s own checkout. Pale bar = the “list” or “total value” price it’s discounted from. Hatched = estimate (brand shows list only; we applied its usual discount). Right column = what a split king costs extra.
Sources: each brand’s size selector on 27 Oct 2026 (DreamCloud, Nectar and Siena show sale prices; Saatva and Bear show list prices). Bear’s split king is two Twin XLs at list $2,212 each. Prices change weekly — check before you buy.
Three things stand out. First, the king premium over a queen is small at the budget end and big at the top. DreamCloud charges $200 more for a Classic king than a queen ($899 vs $699), Nectar $100 more for the Premier ($1,099 vs $999), and Siena $70 more ($399 vs $329). Saatva’s list prices jump $500 from queen to king on the Classic ($2,229 to $2,729) and $520 on the Latex Hybrid ($2,759 to $3,279). Tom’s Guide puts the average king at around $1,500 against about $1,200 for a queen, which is a fair benchmark: anything well above $1,500 needs to justify itself with measured performance or durability.
Second, the list prices are fiction. DreamCloud’s Classic king shows a “total value” of $1,982 and sells for $899; the Premier shows $3,314 and sells for $1,369. Nectar’s Premier king is “worth” $2,544 and costs $1,099. Saatva and Bear publish list prices at checkout and discount with near-permanent promotions — about 15% at Saatva and 30% at Bear, judging by the queen prices we track — so we’ve shown estimated king prices for them, hatched. Never let a “60% off” banner push you up a tier. Our best budget mattress guide explains anchor pricing, and our best time to buy a mattress guide covers when big sizes drop furthest.
Third, a split king costs $100 to $600 more than a one-piece king at most brands, because you’re buying two complete mattresses with four long edges instead of two. Bear is the exception: there is no split king product, just two Twin XLs at list $2,212 each, which makes its split king roughly $1,300 dearer than its king even after the usual discount. Budget for that before you fall in love with the idea of mixing firmnesses.
#1 · Best king size mattress overall
DreamCloud Premier Hybrid
A plusher Euro-top hybrid that suits side sleepers and couples, at about $1,000.

5.5/10 · Medium — Labeled medium-firm but tests softer (RTINGS Medium-Plush, 36 Pa/mm).
The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid wins because it nails the two jobs a king has to do. RTINGS measured its edge support at 8.5 and its motion isolation at 8.6; very few beds we track score that high on both. A plush Euro top over pocketed coils gives strong pressure relief (8.2), so it suits the side-sleeping partner, and RTINGS scored it 8.0 for cooling — welcome when two bodies share one surface.
The king costs $1,369 at DreamCloud, the California king $1,299 and the split king $1,798, and all three sizes ship boxed. The downsides are real: it tests softer than its medium-firm label, so heavier back and stomach sleepers should look at the Saatva Classic or the Bear Elite instead, and its RTINGS longevity score is just 5.1. Use the 365-night trial deliberately, and read our DreamCloud review for the brand’s patchy service record before you buy.

#2 · Best luxury king size mattress
Saatva Classic
The most-awarded luxury innerspring: coil-on-coil support, Euro top, three firmnesses, white-glove delivery.
Read the full Saatva Classic review →Performance (0–10)
6.5/10 · Medium-firm — Luxury Firm (most popular). Also Plush Soft (Saatva’s label ~3; RTINGS measured 39 Pa/mm, medium-plush) and Firm (~8). RTINGS’ 43 Pa/mm Luxury Firm reading is from a double-pocket-coil unit; the official continuous-coil build tested medium-firm.
If you want the consensus pick, this is it. Tom’s Guide and TechRadar both name the Saatva Classic the best king size mattress overall for 2026. It comes in three firmnesses (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm) and two heights, which makes it unusually easy to match to two different bodies. RTINGS measured edge support at 8.2 and cooling at 7.4, and its coil-on-coil build gives the hotel-bed bounce that makes it easy to move around a big surface.
King-specific facts matter here. The king lists at $2,729 (11.5″) or $2,749 (14.5″), and after Saatva’s usual ~15% discount you should expect to pay around $2,320. It weighs 130 lb in the 11.5″ king and 145 lb in the 14.5″, per Saatva — and Saatva delivers it free with white-glove setup and removal of the old bed, so you never wrestle it up the stairs. Saatva sells split king and split California king versions, but its product page says the 11.5″ height is the one for adjustable bases. The weakness is motion: Mattress Clarity scored its motion isolation just 2.6 out of 5, so light sleepers should pick our #1. See the full Saatva review, or Saatva vs DreamCloud for the head-to-head.

#3 · Best split king mattress
Bear Elite Hybrid
RTINGS’ best medium-firm mattress for most people: three firmnesses, near-perfect edges, great cooling.
Read the full Bear Elite Hybrid review →Performance (0–10)
6/10 · Medium-firm — Medium tested (RTINGS Medium-Firm, 51 Pa/mm). Soft ≈5, Firm ≈7–8.
The Bear Elite Hybrid is the most flexible split king we can recommend. Bear sells it in Soft, Medium and Firm, and a split king is simply two Twin XLs — so one of you can order Soft and the other Firm. RTINGS named the Medium its best medium-firm mattress for most people in 2026, measured the strongest edges in our database (9.7), and scored it 7.8 for motion isolation and 7.9 for cooling. Bear’s help center lists the Elite Hybrid as compatible with adjustable bases.
The costs are the catch. Bear lists the king at $2,570; at Bear’s routine ~30% discount that’s roughly $1,800. Each Twin XL lists at $2,212, so a split king is $4,424 before discounts — the steepest split premium on this page. And RTINGS rates its longevity just 4.3, the lowest of our picks. If you need a split king mainly for an adjustable base and don’t need different firmnesses, DreamCloud’s and Nectar’s split kings are far cheaper. More in our Bear review.

#4 · Best value king size mattress
DreamCloud Classic Hybrid

6.5/10 · Medium-firm — Testers 6–7.5; brand now labels it Firm; RTINGS measured Medium-Plush (39 Pa/mm).
At $899 for a king (and the same for a California king), the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid is the best-value big bed we track. Tom’s Guide names it the best value hybrid king, TechRadar calls DreamCloud its best king size mattress for couples, and RTINGS measured edge support at 9.0 — second only to the Bear Elite among our picks. Responsiveness is also 9.0, so changing position on a wide bed is easy.
The trade-offs are average motion isolation (7.6) and a longevity score of 5.5. It’s firmer than our #1, which suits back sleepers and couples who share a medium-firm preference. The split king costs $1,198, the cheapest coil split king on this page. Full details in our DreamCloud Classic Hybrid review.

6/10 · Medium-firm — Testers 5.5–6; RTINGS Medium (45 Pa/mm).
If one of you wakes at every roll and creak, put the Nectar Premier on your list. RTINGS measured its motion isolation at 8.8, tied for the best we track, and Tom’s Guide named it the best memory foam mattress of 2025. The king costs $1,099, only $100 more than the queen, and the California king is the same price.
Its edges are soft (6.2), which is why it ranks lower than it does on our couples list. But a king is where that weakness matters least: with 38 inches each, you rarely sleep at the perimeter. It’s best for average-weight side sleepers and not for stomach sleepers or anyone over 230 lb. Compare it with its sibling in our Nectar vs DreamCloud breakdown.

Latex, memory foam and cheap king picks
Saatva Latex Hybrid — best king for durability and cooling. A king lists at $3,279 (about $2,790 at Saatva’s usual discount), so it is the most expensive pick here. You get what you pay for in longevity: RTINGS scored it 8.3, the highest of any Saatva, with cooling at 8.6 and edge support at 9.1. It is firm, so it suits back and stomach sleepers best, and at 150 lb in king size it is a bed you want delivered and set up — which Saatva does for free. If you plan to keep a king for a decade, the cost per year looks a lot better than the sticker.
Siena Memory Foam — best cheap king. Tom’s Guide names a Siena its best cheap king under $400 and TechRadar calls it the best cheap king size mattress. Bought direct, the king is $399, the California king $399 and the split king just $498. It’s a medium-firm foam bed with decent motion isolation (7.5) and weak edges (5.0), so think guest room, first apartment or a stopgap. Amazon stocks it too, but Siena’s 180-night trial generally only applies to direct orders. More cheap options in our best Amazon mattresses guide.
Also worth a look: TechRadar names the all-foam Nectar Classic its best memory foam king; it costs $949 in king, with motion isolation of 8.4 but soft edges (6.2). The Nectar Classic Hybrid adds coils for $1,049 a king, keeps motion isolation at 8.6 and lifts edges to 7.4 — a sensible middle ground. Our Nectar review compares the whole range.

Split king mattress: who needs one, and which brands sell it
A split king is two Twin XL mattresses, each 38 × 80 inches, placed side by side to make the 76 × 80 footprint of a standard king. Same frame, same headboard, same top sheet and duvet — only the mattress and the fitted sheets come in two pieces. There’s also a split California king, made of two narrower 84-inch halves, but far fewer models are sold that way; of our picks, only Saatva lists it on the Classic.
The split king exists for three reasons. The biggest is adjustable bases: a single king mattress can’t have one side raised and the other flat, so couples who want independent head and foot adjustment need two halves on a split base. The second is different firmness preferences — with two mattresses you can each have exactly what you want. The third is motion: two separate mattresses transfer almost nothing between them, which no one-piece bed can match.
Do you need a split king? Four questions
Start at the top. The first “yes” is your answer; four “no”s mean a standard one-piece king.
- 1.Will you use an adjustable base and want each side to move on its own?Split king — it’s the only way two people raise their heads independently.
- 2.Are your firmness preferences more than one level apart (e.g. soft vs firm)?Split king — two Twin XLs in different firmnesses, e.g. Bear Elite Soft + Firm.
- 3.Does a partner’s tossing still wake you on a good foam bed?Split king — two separate mattresses share almost no motion.
- 4.Is either of you over about 6′4″?California king — 84″ long, though 2″ narrower per person.
The downsides are just as concrete. There’s a seam down the middle, which you’ll notice if you like to cuddle or if a child climbs in between you; a king-size topper over both halves or a foam “bridge” strip helps. You need split king sheets or two Twin XL fitted sheets. And as the price ladder shows, it costs more — $99 more at Siena, $299 more for the DreamCloud Classic, $149 more for the all-foam Nectar Classic, $399 to $449 more for the Nectar Premier and Classic Hybrid, and far more for the Bear Elite. If none of the flowchart’s questions get a “yes”, a standard king is the better buy.
Which picks come in Cal king, split king — and bend on an adjustable base?
From each brand’s size selector and adjustable-base help pages, October 2026.
| Model | Cal king | Split king | Adjustable base |
|---|---|---|---|
| DreamCloud Premier Hybrid | Yes | Yes ($1,798) | Yes — pocketed coils (brand) |
| Saatva Classic | Yes | Yes, plus split Cal king | 11.5″ height only |
| Bear Elite Hybrid | Yes | 2 × Twin XL, mix firmness | Yes (Bear help center) |
| DreamCloud Classic Hybrid | Yes | Yes ($1,198) | Yes — pocketed coils (brand) |
| Nectar Premier | Yes | Yes ($1,498) | Yes (Nectar) |
| Saatva Latex Hybrid | Yes | Yes | Yes (all but Classic 14.5″) |
| Siena Memory Foam | Yes | Yes ($498) | Not stated |
On adjustable bases, check the specific model, not just the brand. Bear’s help center says most Bear mattresses work on adjustable bases and names the Elite Hybrid. Nectar says its mattresses are commonly used on adjustable bases. DreamCloud’s guide says its pocketed-coil hybrids move with a base, while traditional bonded-coil innersprings generally don’t. Saatva says its 11.5″ Classic split king and split Cal king pair with its own split adjustable bases; its product page also says all Saatva beds except the 14.5″ Classic work on its adjustable base. In practice: if you want a Saatva Classic on an adjustable base, order the 11.5″.
California king vs king: which is bigger?
Neither, really. A standard king (sometimes called an Eastern king) is 76 × 80 inches; a California king is 72 × 84. The king is four inches wider, the California king four inches longer, and their surface areas differ by about half a percent. They are two different shapes for two different problems.
Queen vs king vs California king vs split king, to scale
Every bed drawn at the same scale (inches). Each colour band is one sleeper’s share of the width. Standard US dimensions per Sleep Foundation.
Queen
30″ each
King
38″ each
California king
36″ each · +4″ long
Split king
2 × Twin XL, 38″ each
Choose a standard king if width is your problem — and for couples it nearly always is. Each partner gets 38 inches, the width of a twin bed, versus 36 on a California king and 30 on a queen. It also has more choice of frames and bedding, and its footprint matches a split king, so you can switch to a split set-up later without changing the frame.
Choose a California king if length is your problem. At 84 inches it is the only common size where a very tall sleeper can lie with a pillow and keep their feet on the bed. It also suits long, narrow bedrooms slightly better. All seven of our picks come in California king, and prices usually match the king (DreamCloud’s Premier is $70 cheaper as a Cal king; Nectar’s Classic $50 cheaper). Just don’t mix bedding: California king sheets won’t fit a standard king, or the other way around.
Watch out for one regional trap: in the UK, a “king” is only 150 × 200 cm (about 60 × 79 inches), as TechRadar points out — roughly the size of a US queen. Shopping from the UK, Australia or Canada? Our UK guide and Australia guide cover local sizes and brands.
King size mattress dimensions vs your room: will it fit?
A king is 76 inches wide, but the room has to fit the bed plus space to walk around it. Hunker recommends 30 inches of walking room on the sides and foot, with the headboard against the wall, and puts the smallest sensible room for a king at 13 × 13 feet. Zoma’s size guide is more lenient: at least 12 × 12 feet, with 24 to 36 inches of clearance. The floor plan below does the arithmetic.
How much floor does a king really need?
A 76 × 80″ king against the headboard wall, with a 30″ walkway on both sides and at the foot (Hunker’s rule). Outlines show Zoma’s 12 × 12 ft minimum and Hunker’s 13 × 13 ft recommendation.
- 136 × 110″ (11′4″ × 9′2″) — king plus 30″ on three sides, before nightstands or a headboard.
- 132 × 114″ — the same for a California king (72 × 84″).
- 120 × 110″ — a queen, for comparison.
- Zoma: kings need at least 12 × 12 ft and suggests 24–36″ clearance. Hunker: 13 × 13 ft for a king, 14 × 12 ft for a Cal king.
The bed and its 30-inch walkways take 136 × 110 inches — about 11 feet 4 inches by 9 feet 2 inches — before you add a headboard, a frame lip, nightstands or a dresser. That’s why 12 × 12 feet is a true minimum rather than a comfortable size. If your room is 11 feet wide or less, measure carefully: you may be better served by a queen with a mattress that isolates motion well than by a king you have to squeeze past every night.
Measure the route as well as the room. A boxed king arrives rolled, so hallways and stairs rarely cause trouble, but an unboxed Saatva comes flat. Saatva’s white-glove crews carry it in, but tight stair turns are still worth checking before delivery day.
How heavy is a king mattress? Delivery and setup
Kings are heavy. Saatva says a typical king weighs between 115 and 180 lb, and its own models span 91 lb (Memory Foam Hybrid) to 169 lb (HD). That’s two-person territory at minimum, and three on stairs.
How heavy is a king mattress?
King weights Saatva publishes for its own beds (lb). Saatva puts the typical king at 115–180 lb — the shaded band.
That makes delivery method part of the buying decision. Every Saatva comes with free white-glove delivery: a crew carries the bed in, sets it up and takes the old one away. The boxed brands — DreamCloud, Nectar and Bear — ship free in a roll-packed box, and DreamCloud and Nectar charge extra for White Glove. If you live up several flights or alone, price that in; it can shrink the gap between a boxed king and a Saatva.
A boxed king also needs room to unbox: you’ll be slitting plastic over a fully expanded 76 × 80 surface, so clear the floor first, unroll it directly onto the frame, and give foam beds a day or two to reach full height and air out. And plan for returns: Saatva deducts $99 from refunds, DreamCloud and Nectar don’t refund shipping or White Glove fees, and Bear allows one return per household on your first order. Returning a king is a bigger job than returning a queen, so choose carefully.
King size mattress for couples: what to prioritise
Most king buyers are couples, so it’s worth being specific about what changes when two people share 76 inches. Motion isolation still matters, but less than on a queen, because distance absorbs movement. Edge support matters more, because the reason you bought a king is to use the whole width. And cooling matters, because two bodies under one duvet make more heat. That is exactly why our #1, the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid, wins: RTINGS measured 8.5 for edges, 8.6 for motion and 8.0 for cooling.
If one of you is a light sleeper, rank on motion first: the Nectar Premier (8.8) or a split king. If you sit on the side to dress, or one of you uses the edge to get up, rank on edges: the Bear Elite (9.7), Saatva Latex Hybrid (9.1) and DreamCloud Classic (9.0). RTINGS’ own king-size roundup makes the same point, rewarding beds whose sturdy edges give you more usable space. Our best mattress for couples guide ranks every bed on those two scores, and our best cooling mattress page covers heat.
Two more couple-specific notes. If one partner is over about 300 lb, the Saatva HD is rated to 500 lb per side and comes in king; see our best mattress for heavy people guide. And if you’re unsure about firmness at all, the mattress finder weights motion and edges when you tell it you share a bed.

Beds that didn’t make the cut: the Puffy Lux Hybrid has good pressure relief and motion isolation (8.0) but only adequate edges (6.9) and confusing “total value” pricing; the Saatva Zenhaven is Tom’s Guide’s best organic king, but its motion isolation (5.0) and edges (5.5) are weak for a bed this size; and the Zinus Green Tea is cheap but Sleep Foundation flagged its edges and durability for heavier sleepers.

King size mattress FAQ
What is the best king size mattress?
The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid for most people: $1,369 in king, with RTINGS edge support of 8.5 and motion isolation of 8.6. Tom’s Guide and TechRadar both pick the pricier Saatva Classic as their best king overall.
How much does a good king size mattress cost?
Tom’s Guide puts the average king at around $1,500, versus about $1,200 for a queen. Our picks range from $399 (Siena) and $899 (DreamCloud Classic Hybrid) to about $2,300–$2,800 for Saatva after its usual discount.
What are king size mattress dimensions?
A standard king is 76 × 80 inches (about 193 × 203 cm). A California king is 72 × 84 inches and a split king is two 38 × 80-inch Twin XLs. Our mattress sizes guide lists every size.
Is a California king bigger than a king?
No. A California king is 4 inches longer but 4 inches narrower than a standard king, and their surface areas are almost identical. Couples usually prefer the king’s width; very tall sleepers prefer the Cal king’s length.
What is a split king mattress and do I need one?
Two Twin XL mattresses that together make a king. You need one if you want an adjustable base with independent sides, or if you and your partner want different firmnesses. Otherwise a one-piece king is cheaper and has no centre seam.
Is a king size mattress good for couples?
Yes, if the room fits it. Each person gets 38 inches of width instead of 30 on a queen, which reduces how much partner movement you feel. Choose one with strong edges so the full width is usable.
What size room do you need for a king bed?
Zoma recommends at least 12 × 12 feet; Hunker suggests 13 × 13 feet. A king plus 30-inch walkways on both sides and the foot needs about 136 × 110 inches before any furniture.
How heavy is a king size mattress?
Typically 115 to 180 lb, according to Saatva. Its own kings range from 91 lb (Memory Foam Hybrid) to 169 lb (HD); the Saatva Classic king is 130–145 lb and the Latex Hybrid 150 lb.
