The short verdict: the best side sleeper mattress
The best mattress for side sleepers is the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid. It has the highest pressure-relief sub-score in our whole database (8.2), RTINGS scored it 8.1 for light and average-weight side sleepers, and it costs around $1,099 for a queen. It also isolates motion (8.6) and holds its edges (8.5) unusually well for a plush bed, so it works for couples too.
If you have shoulder and hip pain, go for the Nectar Premier: Sleep Foundation scored its pressure relief 9.0, and Sleepopolis singles it out for hip pain. If you want a luxury innerspring, the Saatva Classic in Plush Soft earned RTINGS’ best side-sleeper score we have on file (8.4). And if you weigh over 230 lb, skip the plush beds and get the Saatva Latex Hybrid, which RTINGS scored 8.5 for heavier side sleepers and 8.3 for longevity.

What side sleepers need from a mattress
When you lie on your side, your shoulder and hip carry most of your weight on a small area. A mattress that is too firm pushes back on those two points, which is why side sleepers on the wrong bed wake with a numb arm, an aching shoulder or a sore hip. A mattress that is too soft fixes the pressure but lets your hips sink lower than your waist, bending your spine sideways and moving the pain to your lower back.
The right bed does both jobs: a soft, conforming comfort layer that lets the shoulder and hip sink in, and a supportive core underneath that keeps the waist from sagging. That is why our ranking leans on two numbers. The first is the pressure-relief sub-score, which comes from pressure-mapping tests. The second is RTINGS’ side-sleeper score, which combines pressure and spinal alignment for a person lying on their side. A bed has to do well on both to make this list.
There is also decent evidence that zoned support helps. A 2021 review of 39 studies by Caggiari and colleagues in the Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology concluded that a medium-firm mattress promotes comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment. Among the studies it reviewed on lateral sleeping, one found that “the customized mattress with different zonal elasticity afforded better spinal alignment.” Zoned mattresses are softer under the shoulders and firmer under the hips. Several beds on this list use zoning, including the Saatva Latex Hybrid (a five-zone latex layer), the Saatva Rx (lumbar zone) and the DreamCloud Luxe Hybrid.
Best firmness for side sleepers, by body weight
Firmness is the single biggest decision you will make, and the right answer depends on your weight more than your preferences. A lighter person barely compresses the comfort layers, so a medium bed feels firm to them. A heavier person sinks straight through a plush top and onto the support core. Sleep Foundation’s firmness guidance for side sleepers breaks down like this:
Side sleepers: ideal firmness by body weight
Based on Sleep Foundation’s firmness guidance. 1 = softest, 10 = firmest.
Under 130 lb
Soft 3 – Medium 5 — You barely compress a mattress — go softer than you think.
130–230 lb
Medium-soft 4 – Medium 5 — The sweet spot most side-sleeper beds are designed for.
Over 230 lb
Medium-firm 6 – Firm 7 — You sink deeper — you need firmer support and real coils.
Two practical rules follow. First, if you are under 130 lb, ignore brand firmness labels and look for beds that testers measured as soft or medium-soft. The Puffy Lux tested at 5–5.5 and the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid measured medium-plush at RTINGS, both good. Medium-firm beds such as the Nectar Classic will feel hard. Second, if you are over 230 lb, don’t buy a plush all-foam bed. You need firmer support and coils, or you will sink too far and the foam will wear out early. The Saatva Latex Hybrid and the Bear Elite Hybrid in Soft or Medium are better bets.
How do you know if you got it wrong? The signs are consistent. If you wake with a numb or tingling arm, or the bony point of your hip aches first thing in the morning, the bed is too firm for you. If your lower back aches, or you feel like you are sleeping in a hammock and have to climb out of a hollow to turn over, it is too soft or too worn. A quick check: lie on your side and ask someone to look at your spine from behind. It should run in a roughly straight line from your neck to your tailbone, not sag at the waist or bow upward.
How we picked: we started with every bed in our database that has a pressure-relief sub-score of at least 7.5, an RTINGS side-sleeper score of at least 7.5 for at least one weight group, or a 9/10 pressure-relief rating from Sleep Foundation, then checked whether expert awards and tester notes agreed. Beds that only work for one weight group are labelled as such. Our full method is on the How we rate page.
Side sleeper mattress scores compared
RTINGS publishes a separate score for side sleepers on every mattress it tests, and it is the most useful single number for this decision. Here is every RTINGS side-sleeper score we have for the beds in our database. Anything above 7.5 is a strong side-sleeper bed; below 7 means you will probably feel pressure at the shoulder.
RTINGS side-sleeper scores (0–10)
Higher = better shoulder and hip relief with a straight spine. Blue bars clear 7.5, our bar for a side-sleeper recommendation.
Axis starts at 5. Source: RTINGS reviews linked in Sources.
Notice how much firmness choice matters. The Saatva Classic scores 8.4 in Plush Soft but just 7.3 in Luxury Firm, and RTINGS rated Luxury Firm only 5.9 for lightweight side sleepers. The Saatva Latex Hybrid scores a modest 7.4 overall but 8.5 for heavier side sleepers, because its firm latex only starts to contour under more weight. Beds tuned for back sleepers — the Nectar Classic and Nectar Classic Hybrid — sit at the bottom.

5.5/10 · Medium — Labeled medium-firm but tests softer (RTINGS Medium-Plush, 36 Pa/mm).
The Premier Hybrid is DreamCloud’s plusher Euro-top, and it is softer than its medium-firm label: RTINGS measured it as medium-plush (36 Pa/mm). For side sleepers, that is exactly what you want. RTINGS scored it 8.1 for light and average-weight side sleepers, Sleep Foundation gave pressure relief a 9, and Sleepopolis rated it 4.7/5, recommending it for light and average side sleepers and couples.
What makes it our winner rather than just a soft bed is everything else: motion isolation of 8.6 and edge support of 8.5 are both excellent, so it suits couples and anyone who sits on the edge to get up. The trade-offs are longevity (RTINGS 5.1) and cooling verdicts that disagree — RTINGS measured 8.0 while Mattress Clarity and Tom’s Guide each gave 3.5/5. It is too soft for most back and stomach sleepers. Compare it with its cheaper sibling in our DreamCloud review.

Nectar Premier Memory Foam

6/10 · Medium-firm — Testers 5.5–6; RTINGS Medium (45 Pa/mm).
Memory foam is the best material for spreading load away from a painful shoulder or hip, and the Nectar Premier is the best-reviewed memory foam bed in our database. Sleep Foundation scored its pressure relief and motion isolation 9.0 each, Sleepopolis recommends it specifically for side sleepers and hip pain, and Tom’s Guide named it the best memory foam mattress of its 2025 Sleep Awards. RTINGS measured it as medium (45 Pa/mm) with a side-sleeper score of 7.2.
It also runs cooler than you’d expect: RTINGS measured cooling of 8.0, though Sleep Foundation gave temperature only 6.0, so warm sleepers should keep an eye on it. Edges are weak (6.2), and it is not built for heavier bodies; skip it if you are over 230 lb. At about $999, it is the cheapest way to get deep, slow foam cradling from a bed experts rate highly. If your pain is chronic and you want coils, the Saatva Rx (pressure relief 8.0, RTINGS side score 7.9) is the premium alternative, at about three times the price. See our Nectar review for the full lineup.

Saatva Classic
The most-awarded luxury innerspring: coil-on-coil support, Euro top, three firmnesses, white-glove delivery.

6.5/10 · Medium-firm — Luxury Firm (most popular). Also Plush Soft (Saatva’s label ~3; RTINGS measured 39 Pa/mm, medium-plush) and Firm (~8). RTINGS’ 43 Pa/mm Luxury Firm reading is from a double-pocket-coil unit; the official continuous-coil build tested medium-firm.
The Saatva Classic comes in three firmnesses, and for side sleepers the right one is Plush Soft. RTINGS scored the Plush Soft version 8.4 for side sleepers — the highest side score we have on file — and measured cooling of 8.3. The card on this page shows the more popular Luxury Firm, which is a different proposition for side sleepers: RTINGS scored it 7.3 overall and only 5.9 for lightweight side sleepers.
You are paying for the feel and the service: a coil-on-coil innerspring with a quilted Euro top that feels like a good hotel bed, delivered and set up by a two-person crew who will remove your old mattress. Tom’s Guide ranks it #1 in its best mattress guide and Sleep Foundation scored it 9.5. The weak spots are motion isolation (Mattress Clarity 2.6/5), longevity and a $99 return fee. Our Saatva review covers every firmness.

6.5/10 · Medium-firm — Brand says Medium Firm (6), ‘best suited for back and stomach sleepers’; RTINGS measured Firm (60 Pa/mm).
Heavier side sleepers have the hardest job finding a bed: plush mattresses let the hips sink too far, and soft foams break down quickly under more weight. The Saatva Latex Hybrid solves both. RTINGS scored it 8.5 for heavier side sleepers, measured longevity of 8.3 (the best in our database) and edge support of 9.1. Saatva says its latex layer has five ergonomic zones, the kind of zonal support the Caggiari review found helpful for side-lying alignment.
It is firm for everyone else — RTINGS measured 60 Pa/mm, and lightweight side sleepers scored it only 6.1. If you weigh under 230 lb, choose a bed higher on this list. The Puffy Lux, which RTINGS scored 8.9 for heavier side sleepers, is a cheaper option, but Sleep Foundation says it is not right for most people over 230 lb, and its longevity is 6.0. With experts split, we prefer the bed that will last. For more plus-size picks, see best mattress for heavy people.

5.3/10 · Medium — Testers 5–6.5 (Mattress Clarity 6.5 in Aug 2026); RTINGS Medium (43 Pa/mm).
The Puffy Lux is the softest bed on this list: testers measured it at 5–5.5, softer than Puffy’s own “medium-plush” label. That makes it a good match for side sleepers under 130 lb, who feel most mattresses as too firm. Tom’s Guide said it suits light side sleepers, RTINGS measured pressure relief of 7.9 and motion isolation of 8.0, and its RTINGS side-sleeper score is 7.8.
Don’t buy it for durability: RTINGS rates its longevity 6.0 because of lower-density foams, and it is too soft for stomach sleepers. Some owners report off-gassing. Puffy’s 365-night trial (for orders from 23 February 2026) and lifetime warranty soften the risk. Read our Puffy review or the Puffy vs Nectar comparison.

5.5/10 · Medium — Medium; RTINGS measured Medium-Plush (36 Pa/mm); Sleepopolis 6, Mattress Clarity 6.5. 14.8″ actual — deep-pocket sheets.
Side sleepers who share a bed need pressure relief and motion isolation in the same mattress. The DreamCloud Luxe Hybrid is a 14-inch pillow-top with both: Sleepopolis scored pressure relief 4.8/5, Mattress Clarity gave motion isolation a perfect 5/5, and RTINGS rated it 7.7 for average and heavier side sleepers with motion isolation of 8.0.
The concern is heat. Mattress Clarity gave cooling just 2.5/5, and two of three testers in our sources found it warm. It is also weak for back and stomach sleeping, and at about $1,599 it costs more than double the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid. Buy it if you both sleep on your sides and run cool; otherwise the Premier Hybrid is the better buy.

6.5/10 · Medium-firm — Testers 6–7.5; brand now labels it Firm; RTINGS measured Medium-Plush (39 Pa/mm).
If you need a side-sleeper bed for under $1,000, buy the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid. RTINGS scored it 7.7 for side sleepers and measured it as medium-plush (39 Pa/mm), and Sleep Foundation says it suits side sleepers between 130 and 230 lb. Side sleepers with back pain, hot side sleepers and combination sleepers
Side sleepers with back pain face a real tension: shoulders want softness, the lower back wants support. The answer is a medium bed with a supportive core rather than the plushest bed you can find. The Saatva Rx was designed for exactly this situation, with micro-coils for contouring and a lumbar zone of gel memory foam; RTINGS measured pressure relief of 8.0 and spinal support of 7.7, and scored it 7.9 for side sleepers and 7.8 for back sleepers. Tom’s Guide recommends it over the Saatva Classic for people with ongoing back pain. Its edges (5.3) and price (around $3,094) are the drawbacks. A cheaper route is the Bear Elite Hybrid in Soft, which Sleep Foundation rated about 5 out of 10 and which has the best edge support we track.
Hot side sleepers have it hardest, because the soft foams that relieve pressure also trap heat. Look for coils and a breathable top. The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid measured 8.0 for cooling at RTINGS, the Saatva Classic Plush Soft 8.3, and the Saatva Latex Hybrid 8.6 — although the Latex Hybrid is only a good side-sleeper bed if you are heavier. Avoid thick all-foam beds if heat is your main complaint; the DreamCloud Luxe Hybrid in particular drew poor cooling marks from two outlets. Our best cooling mattress guide goes further.
Combination sleepers who start on their side and end up on their back need a bed that is easy to move on and doesn’t let the hips sink when they roll over. Responsive coil hybrids beat slow memory foam here. The DreamCloud Classic Hybrid measured 9.0 for responsiveness at RTINGS, and the Bear Elite Hybrid 9.4, compared with slow-to-respond all-foam beds like the Nectar Classic. If you spend at least half the night on your side, choose the softer end of medium (around 5); if you spend most of it on your back, go medium-firm (around 6).
Couples with different needs — one side sleeper, one back sleeper — are better served by a medium bed both can tolerate than by the softest option. The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid sits right on that line, with strong motion isolation so the back sleeper’s movement doesn’t wake the side sleeper. Another option is a flippable bed: the Saatva Zenhaven has a plush side and a firm side, though you have to agree on one at a time. See our best mattress for couples guide.
Best mattress for side sleepers with shoulder and hip pain
Shoulder and hip pain are the two complaints that bring most side sleepers to a page like this, and they usually have the same root: too much load on too small an area for too many hours. When you lie on your side, the shoulder and the outer hip are the widest points of your body, so on a firm bed they take nearly all of the pressure while the waist hangs unsupported between them.
Hip pain deserves a specific mention. OrthoInfo, the patient site of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, notes that with hip bursitis “the pain is worse at night, when lying on the affected hip.” That makes the mattress matter more, not less: a firm surface presses directly on the inflamed area for hours. Spine surgeon Peter Derman makes the same point about side sleepers from the other direction, writing for Spine-health that a mattress that is too firm keeps the shoulders from sinking enough, while one that is too soft lets the pelvis sag.
Our picks: for shoulder pain, choose the softest bed your weight allows — the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid for most people, or the Puffy Lux if you are under 130 lb. For hip pain, the Nectar Premier is our first choice, because slow memory foam spreads load away from the hip bone better than anything else here. For both together, plus a stiff lower back, the Saatva Rx is the specialist option. And if you are over 230 lb with hip pain, the Saatva Latex Hybrid is the safer bet, because soft foams compress under heavier hips and can leave you sinking into the problem you were trying to fix.
Where it hurts tells you what to change
Morning symptom → likely mattress cause → first fix to try.
Numb or tingling arm, sore shoulder
Likely cause
Bed too firm at the shoulder
Try first
Go a step softer, or add a 2–3″ soft topper
Hip bone aches first thing
Likely cause
Too firm, or a dip under the hip
Try first
Softer comfort layer; check the bed for sagging
Lower back aches, hard to roll over
Likely cause
Too soft or worn — hips sink
Try first
Go a step firmer; pillow between the knees
Neck stiff, head tilted
Likely cause
Pillow too low or too high
Try first
Pillow that fills the ear-to-mattress gap
If one shoulder hurts more than the other, alternate sides through the night where you can, and try hugging a pillow so your top arm doesn’t roll forward and pull the shoulder with it. These small changes cost nothing and are worth trying alongside any new mattress.
Best mattress topper for side sleepers
Not every side sleeper with a sore shoulder needs a new mattress. If your bed is reasonably young, flat and supportive but simply too firm, a topper is a far cheaper fix. Side sleepers are the people toppers help most, because the problem a topper solves — too little give at the surface — is exactly the problem a firm bed causes at the shoulder and hip.
In our best mattress topper guide, the top pick for side sleepers is the Tempur-Adapt + Cooling, a 3-inch layer of Tempur memory foam, with the Puffy Deluxe in Soft as the runner-up and the Lucid 4-inch gel topper as the budget choice. As a rule, 2–3 inches of memory foam or soft latex is enough to change how a bed feels without making it unstable. Heavier side sleepers need to be careful: thin, soft toppers can bottom out, so go thicker and denser.

Yes → Budget for a new bed; a topper is a stopgap.
- 3
Bed sound but too firm at shoulder and hip?
Yes → Add a 2–3″ soft memory foam or latex topper.
- 4
Side sleeper over about 250 lb?
Yes → Go 3–4″ and denser, or a softer coil bed — thin, soft toppers can bottom out.
Lifespan: Sleep Foundation. Bottoming-out thresholds: testers cited in our topper guide.
The limit is simple: a topper cannot fix a sagging mattress. If there is a dip under your hip, a topper will sink into it and you will still wake up twisted. Sleep Foundation suggests most mattresses last around 6 to 8 years; past that, put the money towards a new bed instead. Our guide to the best time to buy a mattress can help you avoid paying full price when you do.
Mattresses side sleepers should skip
These beds are good at other things, but the data says they are the wrong choice if you mainly sleep on your side:
- Bear Original — pressure relief of 6.0 and a firm 6.5–8 feel. Sleep Foundation rated it firm (7), and testers recommend it for back and stomach sleepers rather than side sleepers.
- Nectar Classic and Nectar Classic Hybrid — RTINGS side scores of 6.8 and 6.7. Mattress Clarity says the Classic is not for strict side sleepers, and Forbes Vetted only recommends the Hybrid to side sleepers over 150 lb.
- Bear Natural — testers reported pressure build-up for side sleepers, and its motion isolation is the worst we track (4.5).
- Zinus Green Tea — RTINGS measured it firm (69 Pa/mm) and too firm for most side sleepers, although Tom’s Guide found it soft. When results conflict this much, we don’t recommend it.
- Saatva HD — unless you weigh over 300 lb. Testers under 230 lb found it firm at around 8/10.
If you are a combination sleeper who spends half the night on your back, a medium bed with more support — the Bear Elite Hybrid in Medium or the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid — will serve you better than a plush side-sleeper bed. If you mostly sleep on your back, our best mattress for back sleepers guide is a better starting point; if you end up face-down, read best mattress for stomach sleepers. Side sleeping with shoulder and hip pain: what else helps
A mattress is the biggest lever, but not the only one. If you wake with shoulder or hip pain, check these before you assume the bed is the whole problem.
- Pillow height. Your pillow needs to fill the gap between your ear and the mattress. Too low and your head tips down; too high and your neck bends up. Side sleepers usually need a thicker, firmer pillow than back sleepers.
- A pillow between the knees. It stops your top leg from rotating your pelvis and twisting your lower back.
- Switch sides. Spending the whole night on one side loads the same shoulder for hours.
- Try a topper first if your bed is young. A soft topper can make a too-firm mattress workable. It won’t fix a sagging one.
- Check the age of your mattress. Sleep Foundation suggests most mattresses last around 6 to 8 years. A dip under your hip is often the real cause of hip pain.
Most of all, use the trial. Every pick on this page has a trial of at least 365 nights, and your body needs two to four weeks to adjust to a new mattress. If your shoulder still aches after a month, return it and go a step softer. If your lower back starts to hurt, go a step firmer. And if back pain is your main issue, read our best mattress for back pain guide, which covers side sleepers with back pain too.
Side sleeper mattress FAQ
What is the best mattress for side sleepers?
The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid for most side sleepers. It has the highest pressure-relief sub-score in our database (8.2), RTINGS scored it 8.1 for light and average-weight side sleepers, and it costs about $1,099 for a queen.
What firmness is best for side sleepers?
Sleep Foundation’s guidance: soft (3) to medium (5) if you weigh under 130 lb, medium-soft (4) to medium (5) between 130 and 230 lb, and medium-firm (6) to firm (7) over 230 lb. Heavier side sleepers need firmer support because they sink further.
What is the best mattress for side sleepers with shoulder and hip pain?
The Nectar Premier memory foam mattress: Sleep Foundation scored its pressure relief 9.0 and Sleepopolis recommends it for hip pain. For chronic pain and a bigger budget, the Saatva Rx (pressure relief 8.0, RTINGS side score 7.9) adds coils and lumbar zoning.
Is memory foam or hybrid better for side sleepers?
Both can work. Memory foam relieves pressure and isolates motion best but sleeps warmer. Hybrids sleep cooler, bounce more and support heavier bodies better. Our top pick, the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid, is a hybrid with a plush foam top — the best of both for most people.
Is a firm mattress bad for side sleepers?
Usually, yes. A firm mattress pushes back on the shoulder and hip. RTINGS scored the firm Saatva Classic Luxury Firm only 5.9 for lightweight side sleepers. The exception is heavier side sleepers over 230 lb, who often do best on medium-firm (6–7).
Why does my hip hurt when I sleep on my side?
Often because the mattress is too firm (pressure on the hip bone) or too old and sagging (your hip sinks and twists your spine). A pillow between the knees helps. If pain persists for weeks, see a doctor — it may be bursitis or another condition a mattress won’t fix.
What is the best cheap mattress for side sleepers?
The DreamCloud Classic Hybrid at around $699 for a queen. RTINGS scored it 7.7 for side sleepers and measured pressure relief of 7.9. Very light side sleepers may find it a little firm.
